How important were farming regions in determining allegiance in the Essay

How important were farming regions in determining allegiance in the English Civil War - Essay ExampleEven in Jacobean London half the aldermen, the merchant princes, were domestic traders. The Newcastle region was by no means alone in its integration into an increasingly national economy. The costs and delays of inland transport, especially by road, meant that pastoral regions still grew grain for bread and beer. Outlying upland counties periodically had difficulty in sending taxes to London, especially in winter, since so small-scale traffic went that way, and cross-country contacts by road were even more difficult - indeed, the average price of wheat in Devon late in the dearth year of 1631 was 50 per cen t higher than in neighboring Dorset. Nevertheless, growing specialization in agriculture accounts for the fame of Cheshire cheese and Worcestershire apples. In the second question, the data input in Mathematica codes will be the quantity of products. In Question 3, the data input will be the same as in question 1 but will have a fixed price of 1 in calculating the demand elasticity. Question 4 will be hard-boiled in the same way as question 2 but will have a fixed quantity of 1 to calculating the fringy cost. Question 5 will calculate the profit function as the difference between the price and the marginal cost of the products. The sixth question will produce the 3D plots of the profit function, with two input variables, the prices and the product quantities. From this, it will be possible to locate the maximum profit to answer question 9, and strike the quantity and the price that produces it, to answer question 7 and 8 respectively. The study was successful in testing all the numerical questions presented. From the results generated, it was clearly evident that the price and the demand were inversely proportional. As the price i ncreased, the demand for the products was seen to be reducing. Modern World Theories - Essay Examplejustice would be most required. Thus, such an effort is made in this debateion to comprehend three of the most prominent theories of the redbrick world. As a first step, let us understand them in their popular definitions to initiate the discussion. Liberalism, as opposed to Marxism and Neo-Conservatism, is a political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favouring civil and political liberties, government by police force with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority and An economic theory in favour of laissez-faire, the free market, and the gold standard (Liberalism. 2008).Now, to understand another major modern theory, Marxism can be well defined as the political and economic philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in which the concept of class struggle plays a central enjoyment in understanding societys allegedly inevit qualified development from bourgeois oppression under capitalism to a socialist and ultimately classless society (Marxism. 2008). some other major political philosophy that came out, mainly in the US, as a rejection of social liberalism and the New Left movements is the Neo- Conservatism which is difficult to be defined, yet whitethorn be understood as one that refers to the political goals and ideology of the new conservatives in the United States, characterized by hawkish views on foreign policy and a lesser emphasis on social issues and minimal government than other strains of American conservatism (Definition Neoconservatism (United States). 2007). Now, to put one over a comprehensive idea of these philosophies, let us discuss them in detail.LiberalismIn critical perspective, Liberalism, as opposed by the other political, cultural, social and economic theories of consideration, whitethorn be put in a high-pitched status in the modern context as it ensures maximum individual freedom in the democratic way of govern ments. Various characteristic features of the theory may be considered in favour of Liberalism. Among them the notable ones are the emphasis on individual freedom, opposition to the government regulation through the advocacy of free market, vastness on the liberal government, democracy, and civil rights and the equality of opportunity to the individual. There so many values, elements, institutions, and other characteristics that buttress the great role of Liberalism. One of the primary considerations among them is its perspectives on human nature. Liberalism, in its radical social form, has been the champion of human liberty and all its perspectives of human being concentrated on this ultimate concept of the liberals. humanity beings, when they are adult, mature persons to enjoy the freedom and selection of things most suiting their growth and progress, were allowed the freedom without the intervention of the government. Unlike the classical liberals who consider the individuals a s able to assume the ways of developing their life, modern liberals cling to the idea about human nature that we are basically moved by impersonal forces and have no capacity to initiate any improvements in our lives. Any such improvement has to come from the outside, and government, with its concentrated and massive coercive power, is the most promising campaigner to bring about such improvement

Intrest throughout the three stories Essay Example for Free

Intrest throughout the three stories EssaySherlock Holmes is the main reference book in the taradiddle, as in all the Sherlock Holmes stories. He is a very proper and intelligent man with an extraordinary gift. He is Observant and uninflected person and can obtain a large amount of information from a small amount of clues, which most others would overlook. From early on in the story Holmes does non hesitate to show off his detective skills when he meats Helen Stoner You have come in by train this morning, I see. I wield the second half of a return ticket in the palm of marks ar perfectly fresh. There is no vehicle save a dog-cart which throws up mud in that way, and then only when you sit on the left-hand side of the driver. This shows that Holmes considers these observations to be trivial, and that they do not stretch his talent whatsoever. medico Watson is Holmes assistant. He is a fully qualified doctor and so a clever man, but next to Holmes he often comes across as a clumsy, less intelligent person. This contrast makes Holmes and Watson an interesting duo to read about. Watson is used for occasional humour during the story. It is very app bent that Watson admires Holmes I had no keener pleasure than in following Holmes in his professional investigations and admiring his rapid deductions. Finally, Conan-Doyle uses Watson to put forward questions and opinions, which the reader may be thinking of. Holmes never openly rejects these opinions, but nor does he sustain them or answer Watsons questions clearly. This creates red herrings, which ensure that the outcome of the story remains a mystery to the reader.Helen Stoner, the lady that has come to Holmes for help, is portrayed in this story as the damsel in distress. She is in desperate need of assistance and has no one else to turn to. Whilst Helen is trying to explain her predicament to Holmes, He is very mollify and collective and does not let her tell the story in full immediately he frequently a sks for details or interrupts Helen. This keeps the reader interested be pay back he or she is eager to learn the story. Holmes attitude towards Helen reflects the time the story was written in.Holmes is very sympathetic and gentlemanly towards Helen you must not fear, said he soothingly, bending forward and patting her forearm. We shall soon set matters right, I have no doubt. Holmes is not being sexist in his assumption that Helen is helpless and afraid, he is merely masking the attitude towards women that was shared by most men at that time. Holmes knows that Helen needs help from someone who is reassuring and confident. Roylott is Helens stepfather. Roylott is an aggressive, violent character who threatens Holmes by bending his poker.Roylott is the acme suspect in the story for the reader, because the death of his stepdaughters would mean he would receive their acquireance. Throughout the story, Conan-Doyle gives several clues as to the outcome of the mystery. Firstly, when Helen is telling her story from the beginning, the reader learns that Roylott, who would inherit an amount of money in the case of the two sisters deaths, is a short-tempered, dangerous man who has a history of violence There was a series of fateful quarrels and brawls with anyone giving him the least offence. These clues make Roylott the prime suspect for the death of Julia Stoner. Secondly, although it leaves many questions unanswered, Helen reveals that Julias last words were Helen It was the band The Speckled band . It turns out that she was describing the snake that fleck her. Finally, there are several important clues given in Helens bedroom, next to Roylotts room, before the plot is unfolded. Above Helens bed, which is fixed to the floor, is a bell rope that does not work, and a ventilator. The ventilator is in a very strange place the dividing wall between the two rooms. It turns out that these features were to allow the snake to get to Helen. much(prenominal) clues were i ntended to intrigue the reader and hint to the reader, giving them a chance to work the mystery out for themselves. These clues are typical of the mystery genre. There are as well several red herrings in the story, for example, the gypsies living in the grounds It must have been those wretched gypsies in the plantation. These points are irrelevant but rig questions in the mind of the reader, making them want to read on. Conan-Doyle also uses tension to keep the reader interested. When Holmes and Watson are waiting for the snake to arrive in Helens room, they are in darkness and speak in whispers. Holmes makes it clear to Watson that they are in considerable danger and must not get caught. Conan-Doyle also uses language techniques such as shorter sentences to achieve this tension. At the end of the story, as was common in stories of this genre, Holmes gives an explanation of the crime for the benefit of the reader. The Devils Foot is similar to The Speckled Band in that from the sta rt there is a character that we have reason to suspect Mortimer. At first, Mortimer does not seem to be as vicious an enemy as Roylott, as was common in the time the story was written, but several clues unearthed by Holmes point the finger at him. The murder in this case is also similar to the murder in The Speckled Band. It is a very horrific and mysterious murder that some in the story believe to be of a supernatural nature. Murders like this were often present in stories of this time and genre and were designed to fascinate and shock the reader. Holmes, however, says if it is beyond this world then it is certainly beyond me.This makes the reader believe that there must be a logical or scientific explanation. The crime is again solved by Holmes, who solves the mystery by noticing small clues and gathering information, in this case, noticing the link of combustible powder between the two rooms in which the murders took place. To support his idea of this powder being the cause of the deaths, Holmes puts his life on the line and tries it on himself. This eccentricity and willingness to go so far to solve a crime makes Holmes all the more interesting and unusual to the reader.

Death of a Salesman Idealism and Truth Essay Example for Free

Death of a Salesman Idealism and Truth Essay?Idealism describes the belief or hunting of a perfect vision often base upon unrealistic principles. This by-line is often contrasted and opposed by truth. The truth and reality in an mortals animationtime is what enables this person to remain grounded and down to earth. An individual(a) must set themselves high expectations in order to be their best, but they must also acknowledge the fact that everything they desire is not achievable. The imbalance of high-mindedness and truth in an individuals sprightliness tin can adopt calamitous effects. It is significant in an individuals career because it can induce to the deterioration of an individuals sanity, destruction of family relationships and ultimately death. This is exemplified in Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, by Willy Loman. Willy spends his whole life pursuing the American Dream. This pursuit leaves him in debt and scatty less than a sliver of sanity. This man l acks the capacity to face the truth the reality of his situation. The negative effect that his dream has on his family and life is simply overlooked and ignored. As Willys life swerves out of control, he tumbles deeper into the abyss of his idealism, to a point of no return. The inability for an individual to achieve a single-minded dream can lead to the deterioration of their sanity. In Willys case, he has spent his whole life pursuing the American Dream a dream that is impossible to achieve. His inability to cope with the failure of his life at first simply causes him to feel lost, but eventually causes him to go insane. Ironically affluent this man, so set on having the perfect life, has an affair with a secretary of one of the buyer. This is simply a financial transaction of gifts for sex and access to the buyers. Willy does this to tend the truth of his life, and in the process completely contradicts his goals. In an attempt to protect himself from the reality of his life, he g oes into self-protection mode. His own mind morphs his memories to achieve and establish his desires. Willys constant flashbacks lay the groundwork to support that he is becoming senile and that his idealistic tendencies caused him to lose the ability to recognize reality from illusion.Willy is a very doubtful individual, and he tries to make himself look better by lying to himself and his family. In his world of delusion, Willy is a hugely successful man. He disguises his profound anxiety and diffidence with extreme arrogance. Biff nails it on the head when he points out the fact that Willy had all the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong. The overpowering pursuit of idealism over truth can lead an individual to lack the ability to cope with reality. Willy has a lot of potential, but he also has a whopping case of self-deception opposite with misguided life goals. He has based his whole life on supporting others and does not know how to live any other way. The effect of lacking a manly figure during his youthful development is substantial effect in how Willy raises his own sons. In Willys pursuit of the American Dream, he clear instills in his sons that being well-liked is more important than character. By emphasizing likability as being the most desirable quality for success he places a high premium on outward projection over inner strength of character. He simply passes on these unrealistic qualities to his sons.I never in my life told him anything but decent things. Willys memories reveal that the values with which he raised his sons has made Biff comes to consider himself exceptional and entitled to whatever he wants no matter of how hard he works or whether it harms others. Biffs perfect illusion is shattered when he discovers that his father is having an affair and he feels hateful and disunited about his fathers actions. His excessive pursuit of idealism shatters Willys relationship with his son this is something that he does not submit the ability t o repair.Willys pursuit of idealism in his life was extremely unrealistic and eventually prevented him from having the ability to see the truth in life. He spent his whole life act to provide for his family. He wanted the life of a salesman. To be well-liked and have a massive funeral when he dies. The reality is that he spent his whole life pursuing unrealistic dreams based on negative personal values. Willy himself points out that hes worth more dead than alive. Its quite tragical that Willy believes he has to kill himself to feel that he is worth something to his family. The reality of the situation is that his death is in vain. The Lomans only had one more payment leftover on the house, and dont actually need the money anymore. But in his blinded illusion, Willy cannot see through or cope with his failure. This causes him to believe that he is worth nothing more alive and kills himself to enable his family to collect his life insurance money. The unevenness of idealism and tr uth in an individuals life can lead to the loss of sanity, deterioration of relationships and even death.By having a good balanced of idealism and truth, there is a greater potential that an individual will discover contentment in life. While pursuing an ideal, an individual may be confronted with truth that must be recognized, and if ignored will have cataclysmic effect. Idealism provides a good source of motivation to strive for excellence and truth reminds us that we are all flawed. Together, with an appropriate balance of both, you have the tools to live a life happy.
